8 Celebrities Who Made a Spectacle of Their Pregnancy

Some stars try to hide their baby bump at all costs, avoiding the media like the plague. Such meek stars do not wish to display their entire pregnancy across the tabloids for all to see, hoping to keep some privacy into their personal lives. On the other hand, there are a handful of celebrities who shamelessly paraded about during their pregnancy, gaining excessive amounts of weight, touting unusual mothering techniques they would practice upon the baby’s birth, and tweeting status updates concerning their cravings. These celebrities took nine months of pregnancy as an opportunity to be further in the spotlight.

  1. Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson couldn’t wait to tell the world about her bundle, confirming pregnancy rumors long before the usual three-month marker. As a result, her pregnancy was followed relentlessly for the entirety of its length. People began to feel as though the starlet had been pregnant forever, spurring on the website, Is Jessica Simpson Still Pregnant? and fellow celebrity tweets from the likes of people such as Chelsea Handler, who typed, “How has Jessica Simpson still not given birth to this baby? I’m getting frightened.” She also gained a monstrous amount of weight during her pregnancy, totaling to an alleged 40 pounds. After all that weight gain, she posed nude for the April 2012 cover of Elle, just in case we weren’t intimately aware of her outrageous transformation. Thankfully, Simpson is slated to be the next Weight Watchers front woman, so she has more incentive to lose all her baby weight.

  2. Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman managed to remain relatively quiet about her pregnancy until she was awarded Best Actress for her performance in Black Swan at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards. When she stepped up to the stage in her pale pink, billowing dress, her baby bump slightly visible, everyone expected the usually poised actress to give an acceptance speech pertaining to the film. Instead, it quickly deteriorated into an awkward profession into the joys of “creating more life” with her then out-of-wedlock boyfriend Benjamin Millepied, thanking him for his contribution. So, instead of thanking the people that gave her the opportunity to be in such a deep, award-winning role, she took the moment to thank her boyfriend for impregnating her.

  3. Jamie Lee Spears

In 2007, Brittney Spear’s younger sister and tween star Jamie Lynn Spears got pregnant at the tender age of 16. The father was Casey Aldridge, her long-time boyfriend who she met at church. It doesn’t get much more white trash than that. While Brittney Spears’ train wreck of an emotional breakdown spattered the press at shocking volumes, nobody ever expected her Nickelodeon star sister to wind up the source of magazine gossip columns everywhere. Spears gave birth to a daughter, whom she named Maddie, and split up with Aldridge in 2009. Throughout the ordeal, Nickelodeon was surprisingly supportive of Spears, denying claims that the fourth and final season of Zoey 101 would be canned. They also considered doing a special on Teen Pregnancy to better educate their young watchers, although that never came to fruition.

  4. Mariah Carey

If Jessica Simpson’s pregnancy weight gain was bad, Mariah Carey’s 70-pound gain from her twins was flat-out nauseating. The star came clean about her pregnancy in October 2010 with her husband, Nick Cannon. However, rumors had already been matriculating about the pregnancy since June earlier that year, so everyone was beyond sick of hearing about it by the time Carey gave birth to her son Moroccan and daughter Monroe (who she irritatingly calls “Rock and Ro”). Ever the egotist, Carey told the Daily News that her “five-octave” vocal range has only improved with pregnancy.

  5. Tori Spelling

Tori Spelling is the celebrity who can’t seem to accept that she’s completely washed up old news. The Beverly Hills 90210 actress is married to husband Dean McDermott and has agreed to a slew of reality shows about her not-so-interesting life, including Tori & Dean: Inn Love, Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood, and Tori & Dean: sTORIbook Weddings. Along the way, we’ve become all too acquainted with her four different pregnancies. The latest pregnancy was supposedly unplanned, occurring only five months after the birth of her daughter Hattie. When asked to explain how that possibly could’ve happened, Spelling relayed that although her doctor instructed her against sex with her husband for up to six weeks after the pregnancy, she didn’t want McDermott to feel that their love life had taken a plunge. Apparently, Spelling would rather undergo another grueling nine months and an extra bundle just to keep her husband sexually satisfied. If you ask me, that isn’t exactly a good trade-off.

  6. Beyonce Knowles

Beyonce captivated the world with her exquisite voice, beauty, and diva attitude. Thus, it’s only natural that the public would be completely obsessed with her pregnancy. When the star first announced she was pregnant in August of 2011 by her husband Jay-Z, Twitter exploded with excitement. Her appearance at the Video Music Awards red carpet gave her a chance to show off a definite baby bump. However, within a matter of months, a scandal materialized when Beyonce appeared on an interview for Sunday Night. Bloggers and tabloids seemed to think that Beyonce’s bump became flattened upon sitting, causing people to speculate that her pregnancy was a fake. This proved false on January 7, 2012, when Beyonce gave birth to daughter Blue Ivy Carter.

  7. Katie Holmes

When Katie Holmes announced her pregnancy with Tom Cruise in 2005, the public couldn’t help but follow along with the couple’s bizarre scientology-based pregnancy decisions with morbid fascination. Holmes and Cruise were merely engaged when word got out of the pregnancy, only a few months after Holmes attested that she would not lose her virginity until after marriage. Shortly thereafter, news started springing up about how Holmes and Cruise wanted to have a “silent birth” in which no sounds would be made once she’d gone into labor, including screams of pain and (some might say necessary) conversation between nurses. They also supposedly followed L. Ron Hubbard’s instructions to swaddle the baby and “leave it alone for a day or so,” raising many brows for concerned parents and doctors who know that infants need immediate and constant care from the moment of birth. Magically, baby Suri was born without any hitches on April 19, 2006.

  8. Demi Moore

Nowadays, nude maternity photos are no big deal. In fact, we can use photos of mothers breastfeeding their 4-year-old children on the cover of Time magazine with relatively little clout. However, when Demi Moore posed pregnant and nude for the 1991 cover of Vanity Fair, it was a huge scandal. Some store merchants were even selling the magazine inside a brown paper bag, as though it were pornographic. At the time, Moore was pregnant with her daughter Scout LaRue Willis, fathered by Bruce Willis. The shot was taken by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, who noted that the shot was originally intended for Moore’s eyes only.
