With all the money circulating in the celebrity circle, it’s no surprise that perhaps the most costly event in a celebrity’s life is their marriage and consequently, their divorce. This is a big year for these two events and the media has been quick to publish the hairy details.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt seem to always be gracing the cover of magazines, but this time, the couple is celebrating an occasion of good news regarding their relationship. After a long seven years wrought with dramatic breakups and reunions, the couple announced their wedding engagement, much to their six kids’ excitement we are told. Pitt reportedly spent a year working on the design with Robert Procop for Jolie’s engagement ring and spent a cool $250,000 doing so. The rock’s appearance is customized to enhance Angelina’s languid fingers. Who knows how much their wedding will cost but it’s certain to be a staggering figure.
Brad and Jennifer Divorce
Prior to his engagement with Angelina, Brad was married to Jennifer Aniston. Given the fact that Brad cheated on Jen with his now fiancé Angelina, it was no surprise that Jen filed for divorce soon afterwards. They were married for four and a half years and had been together three years prior to that but had no children. Since the divorce, Brad has become the legal father to six children with Angelina. The wedding cost them more than $1 million and apparently featured 50,000 flowers and a fireworks display. In contrast, the divorce was settled quietly, but with big numbers involved. According to reports, Jennifer was awarded the $29 million mansion in Malibu and Brad walked away with major shares of the Plan B Entertainment Company. The company aided in the production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and is worth $50 million total.
We all know the tragic tale of model and actress Kim Kardashian and her 72-day wedding to Kris Humphries, but let’s talk numbers. Although the black and white extravaganza of the wedding was worth $10 million, the celebrities didn’t pay much of that. The vendors involved cut or discounted the cost of their products and services in exchange for the fame associated with the Kardashian name. To mention just a few of those free products: the Lehr & Black wedding invitations priced at $10,000 and the Hansen’s Cakes wedding creation at $6,000. Even Kris Humphries got a discount on the engagement ring from Lorraine Shwartz, though it still set him back $2 million. None of these expenses compared to outrageous expense of a $50,000 facelift for Kim’s mother, Kris Jenner, however.
It would seem such a costly wedding would be worth keeping around for more than two and a half months, but on day 72 of their wedding, Kim filed for a divorce. One would think that the divorce would have incurred a cost similar to that of the wedding but no such luck. Apparently the nuptials were so cut-and-dry that Kim ended up taking home a fraction of the total net worth.
Majestic and Glory
The second most expensive wedding in 2011 was the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Unlike the Kim Kardashian’s short lived fairytale, this royal couple is still together. Though her ring cost significantly less than Kim’s, her cake, dress, and reception far surpassed being priced at $80,000, $70,000, and $600,000 respectively. The total expense for the royal wedding was a whopping $34 million. As if the wedding didn’t cost enough, identical wax figures were created of the royal couple and the nearly $250,000 a piece replicas were put on display at Madame Tussauds in Blackpool. Similar waxworks of William and Kate are on display in London, New York, and Amsterdam. So far, no Kardashian waxes have been publicized.
Musical Love – Third Time’s the Charm
Let’s hope “Sweet Caroline” singer Neil Diamond’s recent marriage to his manager, Katie McNeil, doesn’t end like his first one. Neil and Katie married privately in front of close family and friends on April 21, 2012, and Neil subsequently announced his updated relationship via twitter. This is Neil’s third marriage but his first divorce was a tough lesson on love and pre-nuptials. His divorce to former wife, Marcia Murphy, cost Neil an estimated $150 million. To date, this was the second most expensive celebrity divorce. Here’s hoping Katie doesn’t empty his wallet in a similar fashion.
The Future of Klum and Seal
Heidi Klum filed for a divorce from Seal Samuel recently after a seven-year long marriage. Both claim they want to settle things quietly though Heidi reportedly has badmouthed Seal on public television several times since the announcement of their divorce plans. The couple has had four children together but more important numbers than that are the proposed settlement figures. Heidi claims the couple had pre-nuptials signed prior to their marriage but Seal responded by filing his papers without mention of them. He does specifically refer to their “quasi-community” assets that he wants to divide. Heidi’s net worth comes from her role on “Project Runway,” her exclusive jewelry line, and a signature fragrance among other smaller ventures. The total net worth is approximately $70 million, a staggering number in comparison to Seal’s minuscule $15 million to his name. The settlement has yet to be resolved on this issue but Heidi and Seal are sure to go head-to-head fighting over the money, regardless of their stated intention to handle things quietly.
